C u r s i l l o
Cursillo is an instrument of renewal, an attempt to provide
a form of perseverance in the Christian life for men and women
of the Church. This objective is sought by involving men and women
in all dimensions of the social environment who are leaders in their
Church. The Cursillo is both a method of Christianizing one's
environment and of developing one's spirituality
History
Cursillo started when a group of Roman Catholic priests and laymen in Majorca,
Spain examined the condition of the Church. From 1943 to 1947 they formulated
a method to help renew the Church. They called is a "Short Course" or "Short
Experience" in the fundamental teachings of Jesus as he lived
with other Christians
They also developed an ongoing program so the initial enthusiasm would continue.
The 1st Cursillo Weekend was held in the United States in the late 1940s. From
the beginning it was introduced into the Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, and
Reformed Church in America. The method is also used in our prison systems.
Cursillo at St. Mark's
Since 1974 St. Mark's has sent hundreds to Cursillo. Fr. Robb was a candidate
on Men's Cursillo #2. Currently there are173 Cursillistas in our congregation.
Approximately 20 Rectors (leaders of Cursillo Weekends) both men and women
have come from St. Mark's parishioners. For years Weekends were held
at parishes in our Diocese. A tractor trailer full of beds and equipment was
transported to the parish having the weekend. By 1996-1997 Cursillo Weekends
have been held at the Duncan Center.
